Fate And Friendship At The Heart Of ‘Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker’ Trailer

The latest trailers for Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker showcase how both fate and friendship are central to the gameplay and auction system of the upcoming Nintendo 3DS title.

In the “Fate System” trailer, interested players get to see clips and samples of the relationship system and catch a glimpse of what it is all about. Communicating with friends in the game deepens the bonds of friendship. As those bonds become stronger, new abilities and demons become available. The communication and bond with other characters is also crucial to the storyline, as it changes depending on selections made.

For those who played the original Devil Survivor 2 on Nintendo DS, the Fate System probably looks all too familiar. In fact, returning gamers might be wondering what has actually changed in the game since the trailer does not go out of its way to point out the differences between the Record Breaker 3DS version and the original. That being said, what should stand out immediately to veterans is the addition of an English voice cast.

What Atlus U.S.A. has revealed about the game’s overhaul is the addition of an all-new chapter in the storyline. Players have the option of skipping the original storyline and playing this new chapter right from the start. Additionally, a new character has been added to Record Breaker, adding new choices and potential story changing scenarios to explore in the Devil Survivor universe. Record Breaker also adds new abilities and demons into the mix, so building those relationships via the Fate System could potentially unlock some shiny new elements to play with.

From what we can see in the auction trailer, the demon auction system also appears to be the same as it was in the original game. Players can bid on demons of varying ratings levels depending on which demons they hope to unlock. If fate smiles on the player, they earn the winning bid and the demon is forced to do the player’s bidding. There is also a “buy it now” feature for those who do not want to be at the mercy of randomness.

Another new element of friendship that players of Record Breaker can enjoy is the StreetPass functionality that will help upgrade demons as you pass by your real-world friends. In addition to getting power-ups for your demons, you can view the progress of the people you StreetPass with, as well.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker becomes available exclusively on Nintendo 3DS on May 5, 2015 at a suggested retail price of $49.99 USD. Pre-ordering at participating retailers guarantees a copy of the limited edition, which includes a four song sample soundtrack CD and collectible decals featuring characters and icons from the game.
