Is A ‘Doctor Who’ And ‘Sherlock’ Crossover Coming Soon?

Fans of both Doctor Who and Sherlock would love to see a crossover between the two series. Steven Moffat, the showrunner for both Doctor Who and Sherlock, has said in the past he didn’t think it would be a good idea. With the highly-anticipated fourth season of Sherlock looming somewhere unknown on the horizon, Moffat sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly in which he was asked whether he’s been swayed to do a Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover.

Moffat’s answer doesn’t entirely rule out the possibility. He seems to be more receptive to the idea than his colleagues. He would like to do it for the fans, but those around him aren’t sure it would measure up to the expectations of Doctor Who and Sherlock fans.

“My instinct — and this is probably from years of doing ‘Doctor Who’ — is I’m just such a tart. If people want to, we should give it to them. But I got persuaded by Mark [Gatiss], Benedict [Cumberbatch], [executive producer Sue Vertue] and Martin [Freeman] saying, ‘Look, it will never be as good as they think it’s going to be,’ and then I say, ‘Yes, but we’ll just bang it out and make it as good.’ ‘Yeah, but you can’t give everybody everything they want all the time.’ I’m in the camp of giving them everything they want. But I think they’re sane and right and I’m just a tart.”

The International Business Times reports Moffat was asked about a Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover back in August and gave a similar answer to the one in his Entertainment Weekly interview.

“You know in some ways, I think Mark [Gatiss] has got a point when he says that however good you imagine [the crossover], it would be almost better in your imagination than it would be if the two grand old egotists actually met. They’d just both go off in opposite corners and sulk that there was someone cleverer than them.”

Before Season 4 of Sherlock airs, there will be a special episode where Holmes and Watson are transported to Victorian London. At this time, there isn’t a set date for this episode. With the time travel aspect of this episode, it’s too bad there wouldn’t be a crossover with Doctor Who at this time. Victorian London would be an excellent location with many possibilities. Fans will have to wait and see, however.

Fans of both Doctor Who and Sherlock will likely continue to hope for a meeting of the minds between the Doctor and Sherlock Holmes.
