The Apple logo is one of the most simple, recognizable logos in the world, but will you pass the memory test and choose the correct logo when given several options to choose from? According to the designers of this memory test, the chances that you will choose the real Apple logo are surprisingly slim. In a study by UCLA psychologists, only a minority of test subjects could correctly choose the Apple logo. Interesting, even people who use Apple products every day couldn’t identify the correct logo during a memory test.

Their study was published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, and involved 85 UCLA undergraduate students. Initially, the 85 undergraduates were told to draw the Apple logo from memory. Out of 85 college-educated participants, only one of them was able to correctly reproduce the Apple logo. When shown several options that look similar to the Apple logo in a second part of the memory test, less than half of the participants could identify the logo correctly.
“People had trouble picking out the correct logo even when it was right in front of them,” associate professor of psychology Alan Castel, who was also a senior author on the study said, according to Science Daily. Castel says that people don’t notice things they see every day. Three years ago, Castel showed that people had no idea where they could find a fire extinguisher that they had passed hundreds of times on the walk to their office. Interestingly, when people are asked about everyday images they see, they are quite confident that they will do well on a memory test. Still, people usually fail memory tests that involve things they see every day. People have a hard time actually recognizing pennies, road signs, and even computer keyboards that they use multiple times a day.
“There was a striking discrepancy between participants’ confidence prior to drawing the logo and how well they performed on the task,” Castel explained. “People’s memory, even for extremely common objects, is much poorer than they believe it to be.”
