Boston Mayor Marty Walsh On Zayn Malik Quitting 1D: ‘We Must Soldier On’

On Wednesday, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh asked his Twitter followers to submit questions using the hashtag #AskMJW. The mayor was then struck by a swarm of devastated teens who were mourning over the sudden departure of One Direction member Zayn Malik, according to Politico.

That day was also the same day that news broke that Malik was leaving the boy band. One fan asked an important question that was truly on the minds of Bostonians that day: Why hasn’t the mayor released a statement about Zayn Malik leaving One Direction? Better yet, why isn’t he holding a press conference?

Caroline Holland asked: “Why have you not released an official statement on the Zayn Malik situation? #AskMJW”

It’s unclear on whether Holland was being sarcastic, or whether he was devastated over Malik’s decision to leave the boy band. Alice 97.3 believes that Caroline Holland asked the question in a joking manner. Either way, it was an important question that needed to be addressed that day.

Walsh responded, “We are all devastated about Zayn Malik but we must soldier on.” What an inspiring message for One Direction fans to hear. The Huffington Post wonders if the mayor meant to write that message “in jest,” or if he was being serious.

On Wednesday was the day that the music died for fans of One Direction. Malik released a statement on his Facebook page, about his decision to leave the globally successfully boy band.

“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

One Direction will perform as a four-man boy band with Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. The guys also released a statement saying that they’re looking forward to the upcoming concerts of their world tour and recording their fifth album, which is expected to be released later this year. As for Zayn Malik, it doesn’t seem like he wants to live like “a normal 22-year-old” anymore. It’s been reported that he’s releasing a solo album on Simon Cowell’s record label.
