Mel Gibson Attempted to Wean Whitney Off Drugs

Never mind Bobby Brown, let’s talk about another Whitney Houston funeral attendee … or non-attendee, as it happens.

TMZ is reporting that a certain Mel Gibson was invited to Houston’s final goodbye, but had to decline the invitation due to prior family commitments (not a bar mitzvah, I’m guessing).

According to TMZ, the family invited Braveheart himself after the actor had attempted to help Houston during her struggle with drugs and alcohol. A ‘source’ informed the site that Gibson’s intervention came “several years ago,” as the songstress was at the peak of her addiction. Gibson reportedly spent a lot of time with her, attempting to help her break the cycle of addiction. He was sort of the anti-Bobby Brown.

TMZ’s mole also revealed that Houston’s family was “extremely appreciative” toward Gibson for his help, and for that reason invited him to the funeral.

None of which has been confirmed or denied by any involved parties, but let’s face it: it’s not unrealistic, is it? It could well have happened. And good on Gibson for that. I mean, with hindsight, having Mel Gibson trying to straighten out your life now looks as useful as going to Chris Brown for relationship advice, but still. The good intentions were there. That’s what matters, people.
