Swedish man survived being trapped in car for months

Just to make it clear here – we have no actual verification of this incredible story other than the originating story from a local Swedish new outlet Vasterbottens-Kuriren, with distribution by Reuters, but is seems that a Swedish man has managed to survive trapped in his car since December 19, 2011.

Apparently a 45-year-old Swedish man was discovered by snowmobilers when they came across his car buried in snow on a forest path not far from the northern city of Umea. Needlessly to say they were caught by surprised when they opened up the car and found the man wrapped up in a sleeping bag; and even more surprised when he managed to tell them he’d been there since December 19th.

While we might shake our heads in amazement that someone could survice for so long it appears that the man may have been living off of his own bodily reserves, much like a bear when hibernating, and eating the snow around him for his water needs. As quoted in the Reuter’s story Swedish doctor Stefan Branth said

A bit like a bear that hibernates. Humans can do that,” he said. “He probably had a body temperature of around 31 degrees (Celsius) which the body adjusted to. Due to the low temperature, not much energy was used up.”

Needless to say the gentleman waas a picture of perfect health when found and while his state of health might lend support to his story there is the fact that he could also have been suffering from his situation and be confused as to when he was snowed in.

Reports from the hospital looking after him say that he is doing well considering his circumstances.
