Chelsea Handler is the latest to level allegations against Bill Cosby, with the 40-year-old actress claiming that Cosby tried to get her alone in a hotel room when they crossed paths on tour.
Handler detailed the incident in a recent interview, saying it happened about a decade ago when she and Cosby were both in Atlantic City doing stand-up acts. The message didn’t come from Cosby himself, but was relayed through a hotel staff member who said that Cosby “would really like to meet you up in his hotel suite” in the afternoon.
“… And I said, That’s really weird. I don’t want to go alone,” Chelsea tells Esquire. “I go, ‘I don’t know him.’ So the three guys I was with — thank God these guys were with me. One was filming and one was like a producer; we were filming something — I brought them up with me to his room and thank God I did, because now I know what would’ve happened if I went up there alone.”
Chelsea Handler said she didn’t think much about the Cosby incident, writing it off until a number of other women started to come forward with allegations that he had drugged and raped them.
“I was like, I didn’t even think of it. Then my friend texted me the other day saying, ‘Do you remember that night we went up to, or that afternoon we went up to Bill Cosby’s and you were so freaked out you made us come with you?’
And I said, ‘Yeah,’ and he said, ‘Hello! You could’ve been one of his victims if we weren’t there.’ And I went, “Oh my gosh.’ “
While the allegations continue to mount, Bill Cosby has remained steadfast in defending himself. Cosby has also trudged on in his career, continuing to tour with his stand-up act even as planned projects with Netflix and NBC were canceled.
Last month, Cosby issued a statement to fans in Lafayette, Louisiana, thanking them for their support and reassuring that he would not be calling off his show there at the Heymann Performing Arts Center.
“Dear Fans: For 53 years you have given me your love, support, respect and trust. Thank you! I can’t wait to see your smiling faces and warm your hearts with a wonderful gift — LAUGHTER. I’m ready! I thank you, the theatre staff, the event organizers and the Lafayette Community for your continued support and coming to experience family, fun entertainment.”
Chelsea Handler said the Cosby incident cemented her feelings toward him. In the Esquire interview she said, “So, yeah, (I think) he’s guilty … I think it’s pretty obvious now.”
