Zayn Malik Leaving One Direction: Fans Call Him A Modern Day Geri Halliwell

Zayn Malik’s shocking split from One Direction has had fans talking today. Some are calling him a modern day Geri Halliwell, a.k.a. “Ginger Spice,” on social networking sites like Twitter.

The singer confirmed his exit in a statement that was released on Wednesday afternoon. Some One Direction fans took to Twitter to compare Malik’s split from Halliwell announcing her exit from the Spice Girls in 1998, according to the Irish Mirror.

One fan summed it up perfectly: “ZAYN MALIK IS THE NEW GERI HALLIWELL!”

Another fan tweeted: “If Zayn Malik thinks today can’t get any rougher he’s in for a nice surprise when Geri Halliwell calls him up to offer some career advice.”

One Direction fans could also find some comfort from hardcore Spice Girls fans on Twitter. One of the fans suggested that fans of the popular girl group should comfort the very sad 1D fans. A fan tweeted: “Dear Geri Halliwell fans, hug a Zayn Malik fan today. We know these feels too well.”

The Metro reported that Geri announced her shocking split from the globally successful girl group on May 31, 1998. Rumors were swirling, as she was reportedly missing from two concerts in Norway and at the BBC’s National Lottery Show just a few days before her announcement.

Halliwell said in her announcement: “This is a message to the fans, sadly I would like to confirm I have left the Spice Girls, this is because of differences between us. I am sure that the group will continue to be successful, and I wish them all the best. I have no immediate plans and I wish to apologise to all the fans and to thank them and everyone who’s been there. Lots of love Geri. PS: I will be back.”

The remainder of the Spice Girls left a short and sweet message. They said, “The Spice Girls are here to stay … Friendship never ends.”

The remaining four guys of One Direction have not yet released a statement about Zayn Malik’s sudden departure. None of the guys have even took to Twitter to speak their mind about the shocking news or about those fan meltdowns.

While One Direction’s future remains uncertain, the Spice Girls are reportedly getting back together. Emma Bunton (a.k.a. “Baby Spice”) told the Daily Star that the girls are reuniting for their 20th anniversary.

“I was with Geri [Halliwell] and Mel B just recently, we love each other and we love performing together. It’s just when the timing is right because we all have our own careers now and we have families, it’s just about getting five schedules together and that’s all it is.”

Spice Girls fans will have to wait for an official announcement. It’s any wonder if Zayn will ever return to his globally successful boy band for a special reunion.
