Separated by only 32 miles by car, Liverpool and Manchester United are two traditional Premier League powerhouses whose ongoing battle for football supremacy in England’s north has made for some of the most memorable confrontations in English top-flight history. Sunday’s showdown at Anfield promises to rank high on the list, because a coveted UEFA Champions League berth next season could be riding on the outcome.
Manchester United faced a similar challenge for its fourth-place slot last weekend when an in-form Tottenham Hotspur visited Old Trafford. A loss to hard-charging Spurs would have dropped Manchester United into a tie on points with the London club for that fourth-place position on the Barclays Premier League table. But the Reds stepped up, sending Tottenham back to East London nursing the wounds of a 0-3 defeat.
This time, however, Manchester United will have to be the road warriors as they face the always-hostile Kop crowd — knowing that a defeat allows Liverpool to surge past them and take the fourth place slot, at least for now. Coming into the game, Liverpool sits fifth with 54 points, Manchester United one slot over them with 56.
United will come up against a Liverpool team that looks, and performs, very differently from the side who were easily dispatched 3-0 at Old Trafford in December. Not only have Manager Brendan Rodgers turned their season 180 degrees around winning eight of nine league contests coming into the Sunday showcase match — and their last five in a row — but the squad is healthier than it has been at any point in the 2014/15 campaign.
Both longtime Captain Steven Gerrard and Brazilian midfielder Lucas will be available and fit for the match. And Gerrard will be playing with extra motivation, as Sunday’s game will be the last time he performs in a Liverpool vs. Manchester United classic. The veteran Liverpool leader will depart after the season for the sunnier climes of Los Angeles, where he’ll become the latest high-profile addition to defending MLS champs, the L.A. Galaxy.
