White Grandfather Handcuffed For Walking With Black Granddaughter

Residents of Austin, Texas are outraged over reports that police roughed up local resident Scott Henson for the crime of having a black granddaughter. Henson is a crime and politics blogger. He claims he was cuffed and detained by police who seemed to not believe him that a white man can have a black granddaughter.

Henson said he was walking home from a roller skating rink with his granddaughter Ty on Saturday night when he was stopped by a female police officer. She said there were reports of white men kidnapping back children in the area and they ordered him to step away from the child.

The officer took the child to the side and questioned her even though she kept yelling,

“He’s my Grandpa”

They were told they could leave at that point but less than two blocks away they were surrounded by five squad cars with their lights flashing. The police jumped out of the cars with their tasers drawn telling Henson to step away from the child and raise his hands.

The Officers roughly put him in handcuffs in front of Ty who freaked out and started crying and trying to run away.

Henson said about the police,

“One of them called out in a comforting tone that they weren’t there to hurt her, but another officer blew up any good will that might have garnered by brusquely snatching her up and scuttling her off to the back seat of one of the police cars,”

The officers kept questioning Ty and taking their sweet time in calling the numbers they gave them to verify they were related.

Henson said the police never apologized for the incident but did tell him they take kidnapping charges very seriously.

Do you think the police handled the situation well?
