‘God Of War III Remastered’ Headed To PlayStation 4 This Summer

Sony is remastering another PlayStation 3 classic for the PlayStation 4. Sony Santa Monica’s Cory Balrog revealed that God of War III Remastered is coming to the console in just a couple of months.

The already visually impressive God of War III will be released July 14 to the PlayStation 4 with a resolution boost to 1080p. The framerate for the remaster hasn’t been set yet, but an accompanying press release states that developers are targeting 60fps.

“This action packed thrill ride of a game will take series newcomers and regulars alike on a retina-popping thrill ride filled to the absolute brim with 1080p gameplay, silky smooth combat, earth-shaking weapons, bosses you simply have to face to believe, and an all-new new photo mode so you can share those most tender of ‘God of War’ moments, like stabbing a Minotaur in the frickin face, with your friends and loved ones,” Balrog wrote on the PlayStation Blog.

God of War III was originally released to the PlayStation 3 in March of 2010. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews at the time for its visuals, action, and scale of enemies. The formula of hack-and-slash adventure coupled with violent imagery and epic moments led to many award nominations and wins from various outlets, such as GameTrailers.

Sony attempted to capture that magic again with a prequel to the franchise, God of War: Ascension, but it was not as successful critically or commercially. Its reception led to shakeups at Sony Santa Monica that saw the departure of God of War III director Stig Asmussen, leaving the franchise’s future in doubt. However, Balrog returned to the studio in August of 2013, which began speculation that the series would continue.

That speculation was confirmed this past December when SCEA CEO Shawn Laydon showed up at a PlayStation Event wearing a shirt that sported Kratos on it. Balrog then confirmed a new God of War game is in development during a retrospective panel.

With a new game in development, you may ask why Sony and Santa Monica are bothering remastering God of War III. Yes, it’s bound to be a money maker as we saw with The Last of Us Remastered last year. But, it’s also a way for the development team to become familiar with the newer PlayStation 4 hardware. For example, Naughty Dog stated that its experience developing a remaster helped build the foundation of Uncharted 4‘s development.
