It seems that the chickens have come home to roost, as the rapper Kanye West has become “persona non grata” at the upcoming Glastonbury Festival, with over 60,000 people signing a petition to stop him from appearing at the event.
The reaction is not unreasonable as West is very outspoken about his views and is seen by many as egotistical and even narcissistic, especially it seems, to those in Britain.
The organizer of the online petition, Neil Lonsdale, feels strongly about Kanye West not coming to Glastonbury, saying he is nothing more than an in “insult” to music fans worldwide and is not an appropriate act for Glastonbury.
As Lonsdale said, “Kanye has been very outspoken on his views on music. He should listen to his own advice and pass his headline slot on to someone deserving.”
As it is, the Glastonbury Festival is more associated with rock and grunge music than it is with rap, and the fact that Kanye has been booked at the headline act was just too much for Lonsdale, who called it a “musical injustice.”
Lonsdale added, “It doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, straight, gay. If you behave like Kanye, you’ve got to expect some opposition.”
The comments attached to the petition say it all really, and for that Kanye should seriously reconsider flying across the pond to perform at Glastonbury.
With one commenter posting, “Kanye sucks. I want to see real artistry. Someone like Beck. He believes his career some sort of public service. Saying he is like a soldier. As a soldier that was my last straw. [He] is egotistical, stupid, unthoughtful and a disastrous [musician.] He is the scum at top of the ladder. Kanye has no talent, it would be a shame to see him perform on the main stage whilst really talented artists miss a chance to do so.”
The festival, which runs from June 24-28, is expected to attract thousands of people, as it is the largest festival in the UK today.
