Whitney Houston’s Album Sales Surge After Singer’s Death

If you’re browsing the top selling songs and albums on iTunes or Amazon today, you’re probably going to see a lot of Whitney Houston. The singer’s music has been flying off of the shelves since her untimely demise this weekend.

On iTunes, Whitney Houston claimed 42 of the top 200 songs. On Amazon, Houston took 10 of the top 20 albums.

Billboard, which tracks music sales, is expecting Whitney Houston’s greatest hits album to sell about 50,000 copies today which could put Houston back into the top 20 of the Billboard 200.

Houston was pretty familiar with the Billboard 200 during her career. Houston had 11 number one hits in her career (You can listen to all of her hits here). Her song “I Will Always Love You” spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200.

The AFP reports that Whitney Houston sold 170 million albums, singles and videos during her career with Arista Records. Her hit “I Will Always Love You” is the top selling single of all time.

Several other musicians have seen soaring sales after their deaths. Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse both saw a huge boost in sales. No one’s talking about a posthumous album yet but it wouldn’t be surprising to see a re-mastered collection released in the next few months.
