After South Africa blew past Sri Lanka in Tuesday’s knockout round opener, winning by nine wickets with 192 balls remaining, cricket aficionados watching live online will be eagerly anticipating what promises to be a taut contest between two traditional world cricket powers in Australia and Pakistan.
Both teams finished their group stage campaigns with four victories — but Australia played only five complete games thanks to a weather-related washout in their match with Bangladesh that resulted in both teams being credited with a tie game, under ICC Cricket World Cup rules.
A few factors would appear to favor Australia in the match, however. First of all, Australia, along with New Zealand, is the co-host nation of this year’s Cricket World Cup, and the quarterfinal game will be played at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.
But even apart from the home advantage, Australia will be spared having to face the intimidating Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan, who in addition to being a left-armer also stands 7’1″ tall — the tallest cricketer ever to play an international match.
Irfan has an injury-prone history and this World Cup is no different. Following Pakistan’s thrilling 29-run defeat of South Africa Match 6, Irfan was diagnosed with a pelvic fracture and was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.
Pakistan’s fast bowling attack has been crucial to the side’s success at this year’s World Cup, and they will rely on Ehsan Adil to fill the final of the four fast bowling slots favored by Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq.
