Kevin Smith Hard At Work On A ‘Mallrats’ Sequel

For a man who only two years ago claimed he was ready to get out of the filmmaking business, Kevin Smith has managed to make quite the resurgence in the industry that made him famous. After wrapping last year’s Tusk, Smith jumped right into a spinoff film Yoga Hosers. His slate doesn’t end there, either. Also on the list of films to make (in no particular order) are Moose Jaws, Clerks III, Hit Somebody, Anti-Claus, and now sequel to his second film, Mallrats, Variety reports.

Like most Kevin Smith-related news, this piece comes courtesy of Smith’s personal Twitter account.

No word yet on who will be joining the cast in this film, but one can assume that Smith will be able to round up the core cast of the first film, including leads Jason Lee and Jeremy London. On Rock 102 KFMA, Smith elaborated on where the film stands.

“It’s half scripted right now and we’re pulling our loot together. We’ve got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting.”

Coming fresh off of the Clerks, Smith wrote and directed the original Mallrats. Unfortunately, both critical and financial success eluded the film. It flopped hard at the box office, and it was only through home release that it garnered a cult following.

That fact remains true for many of Smith’s films to this day. His films never make a whole lot on the front end (his highest grossing film is 2010’s Cop Out with just under $45 million domestically), but they tend to have a long shelf life for a very specific audience. Smith has embraced this idea in the past year or so, opting to make films that make him happy rather than films that make a lot of money.

“Lately I’ve been doing this thing where I’m like ‘Do you want to do what’s good for your career or do you just want to have fun?’ Nobody’s clamoring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It’s been like 20 years.”

It’s that philosophy that’s led Smith down the path he’s walking now with films like Tusk and Clerks III. Now that path has led him to Mallrats 2. As for the end of Kevin Smith’s film career? Well, don’t expect that to happen anytime soon. In a Facebook post, Smith addresses that very question.

“Saw some websites are reporting Clerks III will be my last flick. I did say this at one point, but Tusk changed all that. Now, the next 2 years are booked.”
