For Tottenham, the Sunday afternoon trip to Old Trafford represents their biggest game of the season so far. A win pulls them even with fourth place Manchester United at 53 points as the two battle it out with each other as well as Liverpool, who make the journey to ninth-place Swansea City later on Sunday, for the final Champions League place.
During the Alex Ferguson era, Tottenham Hotspur found themselves largely helpless against Manchester United, especially on the road, going 13 long years without a win at Old Trafford. But since pulling out a dramatic win in the 2012-13 season meeting at the storied Manchester football ground, Tottenham have not lost to United in their last five confrontations.
In fact, Spurs have wins under their belts from both of their last two trips to Manchester United.
Grabbing all three points is especially important for Spurs, because the remaining schedule favors the London side. Of the 10 games remaining on Tottenham's Premier League fixture list, only Sunday's match and a May 2 visit to White Hart Lane by Manchester City involve teams currently ahead of Spurs on the table.
But Manchester United still must face Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City — the current top three teams — plus Liverpool, who now sit just two points behind United in fifth place.
Tottenham also remains one of the most in-form sides in the English top flight, losing just three league games in the past four months.
Also working in Spurs favor Sunday, the fact that Manchester United will miss star striker Robin Van Persie, who remains out with an ankle injury, defender Jonny Evans — serving the second of a six-game suspension for spitting — and Argentinian midfielder Angel Di Maria, also suspended.
Tottenham, on the other hand, goes into Sunday's match at full strength, and with 21-year-old striker Harry Kane poised to take the Premier League goal-scoring lead. Kane's 16 league goals rank him just one behind co-leaders Diego Costa of Chelsea and Sergio Aguero of Manchester City.
