Teacher Sprays Stinky Student With Febreze

On Feb. 2 Christian Roberts was sent into the hallway of his Newfoundland school for carrying a pungent odor and once there his teacher sprayed the boy with Febreze.

Shortly after that incident the boys mother sent a letter to the Nova Central School District to express her outrage over the incident at Twillingate Island Elementary. In her letter she wrote:

“On Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, my son Christian Roberts had caplin (a small, smeltlike fish) for his lunch. This is what he wanted.”

“When he came home from school at the end of the day, I noticed that he was very quiet . . . He told me that when he went back to school after lunch he was teased by his classmates and other kids . . . because he smelled like fish because he had caplin for his dinner.

“He told me that his teacher . . . took him outside of the classroom for one full period. He told me that she sprayed him with some kind of household spray like room deodorizer or Febreze. He then went back to his regular class.”

The boys mom Patti Rideout says the boy feels bad about the situation and says:

“He is very embarrassed by his teacher and does not want to return to school.”

The school did issue a letter of apology on Feb. 6 in which principal David K. Dove and vice-principal Tonia Gillard wrote:

“(We) . . . acknowledge the unfortunate incident that occurred involving your son,” they wrote. “On behalf of the teacher concerned and the school, I would extend an apology to you and your son regarding the manner in which this issue was dealt with.”

While Rideout first wanted the teacher to be fired she has since cooled down and backed off that request.
