YouTube/Facebook Giving Girls Tourettes? [Videos]

The search continues to find out why 12 girls at the LeRoy High School in New York have come down with a mysterious illness that presents with Tourettes like symptoms such as muscle twitches and verbal tics. Doctors have been suggesting that the girls may be suffering from a conversion disorder. Erin Brockovich, the environmental lawyer made famous by the movie in her name is looking for environmental factors.

Yet one doctor is suggesting there may be another culprit…Facebook, YouTube and other social media sites.

WKBW News reports that Dr. David Lichter, a University of Buffalo neurology professor, has a new theory. Lichter thinks the children are unconsciously mimicking videos they have seen posted to the social networking sites and that the symptoms are happening past their own ability to detect the source.

Lichter told WKBW,

“I think you do have the potential for people going online and witnessing other student’s behavior, then I think this medium has the potential to spread it beyond the immediate environment.”

The parent’s don’t really think this is the case. They have been attending dozens of town meetings and bringing their children to multiple doctors trying to find out what is going on with their kids. One of the doctors is suggesting this is a type of mass hysteria that is manifesting in the symptoms.

Needless to say the parents just want help to get it to stop. As mentioned earlier, high profile environmental attorney Erin Brockovich is on the case and is having the soil, water and school tested for environmental contaminants.
