Paris Saint Germain dominated the first leg of the tie in Paris, but managed to score only once while also conceding a goal. That means Chelsea comes into its home leg with an away goal advantage of one.
In other words, a draw of 0-0 or 1-1 sends Chelsea through on away goals. But a draw of 2-2 would send Paris Saint Germain through, based on two away goals.
Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho says he expects a bruising, hard-fought contest because he says his counterpart, Laurent Blanc’s club, are the most “aggressive” opponent that Chelsea has faced this season, and are likely to use fouls as their chief defensive tactic.
“This season we have played teams from the Championship, League One and League Two, but the most aggressive team was PSG,” Mourinho said on Tuesday. “For a team with so much quality I expected more football.”
But on the Paris Saint Germain side, Blanc says that he expects Chelsea to have no answer to the power of Ibrahimovic up front.
“He’s someone who loves the big occasion. He’s a player who can score at any time, in any venue, against any opponent. I hope he shows that on Wednesday night,” Blanc said in his pert-match interview.
Blanc also countered Mourinho’s accusation of “aggression” by throwing it back in Chelsea’s face, particularly in the direction of pugnacious Brazilian striker Diego Costa.
“He likes contact, and provokes opposition players. That’s part of his game,” the PSG boss said. “He will try to provoke a reaction. We need to stay calm, not get caught up in his game.”
