New Mexico High School Students Are Holding A Communism-Themed Prom

Students at a New Mexico high school will be having a Communism-themed prom (they’re calling it “Prom-munism,” get it?), a decision that school administrators might be okay with, the Associated Press is reporting.

Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School is a public charter school in Albuquerque whose students are in the International Baccalaureate Program. In other words, they’re really, really smart. Their classmate, Sarah Zachary, tells the AP that many of the students are “intense about politics.” They also have some jokesters among them; it was those jokesters who pushed the Communism idea on the prom committee.

“We have a lot of jokesters in our grade, so they wanted it to be funny and a lot of them are really intense with politics.”

Sam Obenshain, the school’s executive director, tells KQRE that the he hasn’t ruled out the Communism-themed prom, but he hasn’t given it the green light yet, either.

“We want to make sure we honor the students’ voices but at the same time we use this as a learning experience for them.”

The prom is scheduled to take place at the Albuqueque Aquarium, which is why one of the options on the table was “A Night in the Reef.” But apparently the jokesters at Cottonwood thought that idea was a little cliché.

It’s unclear, as of this post, how the Communism theme is going to play out at the prom; maybe the students will have to wait in long lines for rancid food?

Although the Communism-themed prom is clearly intended as a joke, and not an actual celebration of Communism, not everyone is on board with the idea, including several students at Cottonwood. Among them is sophomore Cole Page.

“I honestly don’t think it’s that funny.”

Another, anonymous Cottonwood student also thinks the idea is in poor taste.

“I don’t think it’s something that they should be choosing as a theme for a dance. I don’t understand that.”

Also not impressed with the idea are certain elements within the conservative media. Writer Jon Street of the Blaze apparently doesn’t get the joke, either.

“The event was originally to be held at a local aquarium with an ‘Under the Sea’ theme. But seniors at the school decided that wasn’t unique enough for them. So they voted to replicate an oppressive form of government.”
