Bellator MMA: Brock Lesnar Vs. Bobby Lashley Could Happen Later This Year

At the end of this month, Brock Lesnar’s current WWE contract will expire, and he’ll likely opt to become a free agent. There’s no question that WWE will do everything they can to re-sign Lesnar, but if Lesnar — who is 37 years old — has any desire to fight again, the time to do so is now, and he’ll definitely have the option, as both the UFC and Bellator MMA will offer Lesnar big contracts.

During Lesnar’s time in the UFC, he was a major attraction, becoming the biggest pay-per-view draw in the history of the company, and the second biggest pay-per-view draw in combat sports behind Floyd Mayweather. Should the UFC re-sign Lesnar, they already have his first fight in mind, as Lesnar would take on Frank Mir to complete the trilogy between the two. Mir handed Lesnar his first ever loss in Lesnar’s UFC debut, defeating Lesnar by submission. Fifteen months later, Lesnar decimated Mir in their rematch at UFC 100, which to this day is the most successful UFC pay-per-view of all-time.

What if Lesnar decides to sign with Bellator MMA? Bellator certainly has the money to sign him, as they’re owned by the mass-media company Viacom. Bellator’s strategy to get on an even playing field with the UFC is to sign big names, and have big name fights — hence why Ken Shamrock will be taking on Kimbo Slice this coming June. If Kimbo is able to defeat the 51-year-old Shamrock, and if Lesnar signs with Bellator MMA, it’s likely that Bellator would make a Kimbo Slice vs. Brock Lesnar fight immediately, and it would take place late this year.

While Lesnar vs. Kimbo would probably be a huge attraction, it’s likely that the fight itself wouldn’t be very competitive, as Lesnar is far more talented than Kimbo. But Bellator isn’t only looking at Lesnar vs. Kimbo, they’re also looking at having Lesnar face another former WWE and current TNA star, Bobby Lashley.

In an interview with Ring Rust Radio, Lashley — who has a professional MMA record of 12-2 — said that he likes his chances against Lesnar if they ever came face-to-face, and while Lashley does have nearly two times as many fights under his belt than Lesnar does, there’s no question that Lesnar faced the tougher competition.

“I’m not one of those arrogant guys that goes around saying I would kick his a** or start trash talking online or anything like that. I’m one of the guys that understands what this business is about and it’s about money. Any fighter at the end of the day that says it’s not about the money is ridiculous. We wouldn’t be training this hard, putting our bodies on the line, and torturing our bodies if there wasn’t a payday at the end of the day. With that being said, if Brock does sign over with Bellator I think one of the biggest fights he could have is me. It’s not a case of this is going to be the greatest fight it’s because we have so many similarities. The crazy part is I have never even come face to face with Brock. I don’t know him and I have never met him. We just have always had a lot of comparison so this time give the fans what they want. Brock and I would beat each other up pretty bad but we will walk away very financially healthy. As far as who would win, of course I’m going to say myself. I wouldn’t take the fight if I thought I was going to go out there and get crushed. Our styles match and we wouldn’t over do the other person since we have the same styles. It would be a very strategic match and I like the match up.”

There’s no question that Brock Lesnar will be the hottest free agent in pro wrestling and mixed-martial-arts in just a couple of weeks, and Bellator is planning on making Lesnar a gigantic offer. UFC President Dana White is confident that if Lesnar is still interested in fighting, he’ll join the UFC because he wants to fight the best fighters in the world. But Lesnar is a businessman, and if Bellator offers him significantly more money to fight lesser opponents, it’s likely that Lesnar will take the deal.

Despite Lesnar’s big blow up with WWE management last week, WWE officials are confident that Lesnar will remain with WWE after his contract expires on March 30.
