English soccer star Adam Johnson was arrested early today on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old girl. The English winger was detained at his home and has since been indefinitely suspended by his club, Sunderland AFC.
Earlier today, Durham police released a statement, saying, “A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16.”
The English media reported that three unmarked police cars, a police van, several plainclothes officers, and a forensics team were seen at his house as he was questioned at a Durham police station.
According to the Daily Mail, “Johnson’s stunning gated property boasts six bedrooms and a sweeping gravel drive and is set in more than two acres of mature woodland.”
“The house is a typical Footballers’ Wives-style property with Italian stone flooring, and a spiral staircase to a mezzanine level. The master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, dressing room and balconies at the front and rear while the other five bedrooms are all en-suite.”
He has since been released on bail.
Adam Johnson made a name for himself in the English Premier League playing for Middlesbrough and Manchester City before settling down at his hometown club Sunderland. The English winger represented his country at various level, making 12 appearances for senior team.
Sunderland released a statement following his arrest.
“We can confirm that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of the police inquiry. No further comment will be made at the present time.”
It has been a day littered with bad news for English soccer. Earlier today, reports emerged that fans of Chelsea Football Club had been accused of racially intimidating passengers on a train after their Capital One League Cup victory over local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The English star had been living with his girlfriend, Stacy Flounders. The pair began dating when Johnson moved back home to Sunderland. The couple recently had their first child, Ayla Sofia, on January 8. It is not known whether Miss Flounders was home when the English international was arrested.
Miss Flounders’ mother pleaded Johnson’s innocence.
“He is 100 per cent innocent and we will stand by him. He hasn’t been found guilty of anything. He is a great lad and has not done anything wrong. This is just a horrible situation.”
The English soccer star’s parents declined to comment on the issue.
