Weekend Box Office: ‘Focus’ Leads The Pack As ’50 Shades’ Grows Dim

50 Shades of Grey has dominated the box office since its release, but now it is beginning to show signs of fatigue. Will Smith’s Focus debuted on the big screen and jumped up to the top spot this week with a great start of $19.1 million.

The numbers from Box Office Mojo show that not only was Focus on top of the list for this weekend, but it wasn’t even much of a race. Second place went to Kingsman: The Secret Service, which brought in $11.75 million in its third week of release.

Focus actually started off hot on Friday with $6.4 million on its opening day, per Collider. At the time, The Lazarus Effect was in second, but it dropped off a little as the weekend went on. It finished the weekend with $10.6 million

With all of the Oscar buzz and many of the Best Picture nominees heading back into theaters, the numbers have been up all around. American Sniper starring Bradley Cooper jumped back into the top 10 and landed at number seven with $7.7 million. It has now brought in a total amount of over $331 million.

Others, such as Birdman, Whiplash, and The Theory of Everything, also bounced back and brought in some decent weekend numbers upon returning theaters.

Here are the box office numbers for the weekend of February 27 – March 1.

1.) Focus – $19.1 million

2.) Kingsman: The Secret Service – $11.75 million

3.) The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water – $11.2 million

4.) 50 Shades of Grey – $10.927 million

5.) The Lazarus Effect – $10.6 million

6.) McFarland, USA – $7.97 million

7.) American Sniper – $7.7 million

8.) The DUFF – $7.15 million

9.) Still Alice – $2.695 million

10.) Hot Tub Time Machine 2 – $2.4 million

Remember that these are estimated numbers and the final box office amounts will come out on Monday sometime. The estimates are usually rather close, but there is no real way of knowing the Sunday box office numbers until early on Monday.

Comedies sure are not having the best showing so far this year, and that was first evident by Mortdecai starring Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow, which absolutely bombed. Now, Hot Tub Time Machine 2 appears to be following the same path.

With an action-packed summer on the way, it looks like comedies are already working toward the losing end of 2015.

Focus has shown that Will Smith still has what it takes to bring in big weekend box office numbers. 50 Shades of Grey still brought in a respectable $10 million, and has more than justified the two sequels that will eventually come in the next few years.
