Florida Pileup Kills At Least 10

At least ten people died last night during a big traffic accident in Gainseville, Florida. Officials haven’t pinpointed the exact cause of the crash but said that fog in the area drastically cut down visibility.

The accident, which occurred on Interstate 75, involved cars, tractor-trailers, trucks, and motor-homes. At least 10 people were killed while another 18 were injured.

The Associated Press reports that smoke from a nearby brush fire made it nearly impossible for rescue crews to navigate the scene. Reporters who were allowed on the highway reported seeing one tractor trailer that was burned down to its skeleton and cars crushed beneath semi-trucks. The rubber tires from nearly all the vehicles had melted away.

Steven R. Camps was on the highway at the time of the crash. Camps said that his car was hit twice but he was able to get out and take cover on the side of the road. Camps said:

“You could hear cars hitting each other. People were crying. People were screaming. It was crazy. If I could give you an idea of what it looked like, I would say it looked like the end of world. “It was happening on both sides of the road, so there was nowhere to go. It blew my mind. It was like a war zone. It literally looked like someone was picking up cars and throwing them.”

The accident occurred late last night. The highway was still closed at midday and Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Patrick Riordan said he wasn’t sure when the highway would be re-opened.
