John Boehner Blows Kisses In Face Of Homeland Security Shut Down — Literally [Video]

John Boehner is literally blowing kisses in the face of a potential shut down of the Homeland Security Department.

With less than two days to go before the shutdown begins, Boehner was asked point-blank what his plans are at a press conference on Thursday by Takeaway Washington correspondent Todd Zwillich.

“With respect to you Mr. Speaker, your answers about what you are going to do are the same as yesterday. Mitch McConnell has said exactly what he is going to do, you know exactly what you are going to get–it’s going to be a clean DHS funding bill. Are you going to put it on the floor? Are you gonna kill it? Are you going to let them vote on it? Have you even had this discussion?”

As the reporter tried to finish his last sentence, Boehner began to blow tiny kisses from behind his podium in a rather bizarre response to what many Americans feel is a very serious issue. Watch the video below to see the House Speaker’s strange actions. When he was done blowing kisses from the podium, House speaker Boehner summarily dismissed the reporter.

“When they make decisions I’ll let you know.”

Boehner did say that a bill to fund the department had been passed. “We passed a bill to fund the department six weeks ago. Six weeks ago!” the House speaker said during the press conference. “It’s time for the Senate to act. How many times do I have to say it?”

However, the bill to fund the Homeland Security Department passed by the House has provisions attached to it designed to stymie President Obama’s actions on immigration. House Republicans have been adamant about addressing what they term “the president’s overreach on immigration” and seem reluctant to consider a “clean” bill that would allow Homeland Security to remain funded, even with the possibility of addressing immigration in a new, separate bill.

Boehner seems to be going against what his Republican colleagues in the Senate are hoping to achieve. Although Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tried to pass a House-approved funding bill with immigration language attached to it four times, even he has offered Democrats a clean funding bill in order to keep Homeland Security functional, and has been open about his desire to avert yet another government shutdown of any sort.

But with just hours on the clock, Boehner still will not say whether or not he will do anything to prevent the shutdown, and he doesn’t seem to be taking matters very seriously. He even responded to questions about plans with a line he used during the government shut down in October of 2013.

“If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, every day would be Christmas.”

In reality, Boehner now has two choices. He can amend the Senate legislation to again include efforts to stop President Obama’s immigration actions and send it back to the Senate, knowing that it has very little chance to succeed, or bring a vote to the floor on the clean bill that simply funds Homeland Security and avoid a shutdown.

If House and Senate lawmakers do not reach an agreement, tens of thousands of Homeland Security employees would be furloughed immediately. The rest, considered essential workers, will be required to continue working without pay.
