Benedict Cumberbatch Pens Letter For ‘Sherlock’ Super Fan’s Funeral

As if Benedict Cumberbatch needed to be more adored by his followers, he went above and beyond with a late Sherlock super fan by penning a letter for her funeral.

One of the most sought-after Hollywood stars took the time to send a heartfelt letter to the grieving family of a 14-year-old fan, who never missed an episode of his acclaimed TV show, Sherlock, and was a huge Cumberbatch fan. The actor is currently filming a special for the series and expressed his regrets at not being able to attend the funeral services for his super fan.

Eve Shepherd died suddenly at home in England following breathing problems. She was born premature, at 28-weeks, and had undergone 200 surgeries after requiring a tracheotomy at just three-months-old. Her love of all things Sherlock was honored by her parents, who wore deerstalkers.

To everyone’s surprise, Benedict Cumberbatch himself somehow got word about his fan passing away and was touched enough to write this letter, which was read at her funeral, the Warrington Guardian reports.

“I send my deepest sympathies to Eve’s family. To lose someone so young who fought for her health all her life must be beyond endurance.”

“I hope they can take solace from the fact that she was clearly much loved and her support of our show is hugely appreciated and shall be remembered.”

“I wish I could be there but sadly am filming the show she loved. God rest her soul.”

“With all my love and sympathies, Benedict xxx.”

Her parents, Mark and Jane, say Eve has been a long-time Sherlock and Benedict Cumberbatch fan and they honored her by playing the show’s theme song for the procession at the end of the funeral. As heartbreaking as the loss of the child was for the family, they are certain she would be ecstatic with her favorite actor, Benedict Cumberbatch’s letter.

“Eve would find this funny as she was a big TV and film fan. She would be giggling her head off at the thought she was in the newspaper.”

“But she would be so happy about the letter from Benedict – she was a huge fan.”

Benedict Cumberbatch proved that he is a great guy by writing this lovely letter, as he is not only filming Sherlock at the moment, but recently got married and is expecting his first child with new bride, Sophie Hunter. The popular British actor was recently seen attending the 87th Academy Awards ceremony, where he was nominated for Best Actor for his movie The Imitation Game.
