Fans can watch the D.C. United vs. Alajuelense match live online and see which team can emerge victorious in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal.

The match will be quite a test for D.C United, who have just spent weeks preparing for the 2015 campaign to start and will now kick it off with what might be one of the best teams they will play in months. The Costa Rican squad will host the first match, with the return leg next Wednesday at Washington’s RFK Stadium.

Thursday’s contest kicks off at 7 p.m. EST from Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

Fans who watch the D.C. United vs. Alajuelense soccer match live online will see a D.C. United squad trying to play catch-up. The American club hasn’t played since November, but Alajuelense is 10 games into their league schedule.

Can the D.C. United squad keep up, asked the Washington Post?

“I don’t know if we can,” noted D.C. United coach Ben Olsen. “Everybody wants to be halfway or three-quarters of the way through the season when you play these games – that is when teams are at their best – but that’s not the case.

“The familiarity with each other will hopefully help us. We don’t have to work on what we are about; that part is already here. We’re just trying to catch up with fitness. We’re close.”

The United players seem confident in their training, believing they are ready for the challenge of playing the seasoned Costa Rican club.

“We had to get ourselves as ready as best we could,” captain Bobby Boswell said. “We’ve done a pretty good job, and if things don’t work out for us, it’s not because of where they are or we are in the season.”

United could have a bit of an advantage. Alajuelense is missing two starters after a brawl in the CONCACAF Champions League last fall, playing without goalkeeper Peter Pemberton and midfielder Kevin Sancho.

The D.C. squad has an advantage of familiarity as well. As MLSSoccer noted, the squad is largely intact from last year, when the team led the Eastern Conference with 59 points:

Like many of the top teams in MLS, D.C. didn’t make many moves in the offseason, mostly bringing in depth to supplement the roster. Veteran striker Jairo Arrieta may have a role to play in this series, especially given his experience against Alajuelense prior to his move to MLS. In addition, newcomers Markus Halsti and Michael Farfan could get an opportunity to play their first competitive minutes for the club.
