Selwyn School Fire Destroys Main Building

A fire this morning at the Selwyn College Preparatory School in Denton, Texas destroyed the main building and forced school officials to cancel classes for the remainder of the week.

The Denton Record-Chronicle reports that the Selwyn school fire was contained to the main building.

The fire broke out at about 7 this morning in one of the wings in the main building. The fire spread to a second ring and soon the whole building was engulfed in flames. Officials have not determined a cause for the fire.

Denton Fire Department spokesman Brad Lahart said that when firetrucks arrived at the fire three quarters of the building was already engulfed in flame.

David Biles, chairman of the board at Selwyn, said that the Selwyn school fire destroyed a building that was used to teach kindergarten through third grade. Biles said:

“This is very sad, but our first concern is for our kiddos. We’re cancelling school today and tomorrow, but we hope to be fully operational again by Monday.”

The fire started before school was in session. No injuries or deaths have been reported.

Biles said that the school will start a fund to construct a new building.
