A student leader from the University of Illinois at Chicago has been charged with the sexual assault of a 19-year-old female student. Cook County prosecutors are saying that the attack has been portrayed as a recreation of different scenes from the book and new film 50 Shades of Grey that is currently in theaters.
According to WGN TV, 19-year-old Mohammad Hossain is being charged with allegedly raping a a female student in his dorm room on the campus of UIC.
Around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, Hossain was in his dorm room with the female student, and it has been confirmed that the two did have an intimate past.
Police state that Hossain told the female to take off her clothes and she did. He then proceeded to tie her up with belts, he covered her eyes, and then struck her multiple times with a third belt.
She told him to stop, but he would not. Upon asking Hossain to stop hitting her with the belt, he then hit her with his fists. After that, he held her down and raped her, according to prosecutors.
Police have also said that Hossain even kept his roommate from entering the room during the alleged rape. Shortly after it was all over, the female was allowed to get dressed and leave the dorm room at University of Illinois at Chicago.
Hossain was soon arrested at another dorm room by UIC police on Saturday night. The female student had contacted them and told them what happened.
The Chicago Tribune states that Hossain is being held on $500,000 bail, and the amount shocked the college freshman upon hearing it from the judge.
The judge was actually surprised that Hossain’s lawyer, Sandra Bennewitz, said her client was in several UIC leadership programs, was on the triathlon team, and was a student ambassador to the alumni association.
“Sandra, how can someone involved in all that let a movie persuade him to do something like this?” asked Judge Adam Bourgeois, Jr.
Bennewitz simply said that Hossain “would say that it was consensual.”
Upon being interviewed by University of Illinois at Chicago detectives, Hossain admitted to assaulting the female student and “doing something wrong.” He then reportedly told police that they were re-enacting scenes from 50 Shades of Grey in a consensual fashion.
For now, Hossain is being held on bail in Cook County, but this has yet to go to court and he could be facing some serious sexual assault charges.
