From Alien To The Almighty, ‘Big Bang Theory’ Sensation Jim Parsons Breaks Away From Sheldon Cooper [Video]

Beloved Big Bang Theory actor Jim Parsons, otherwise known as Sheldon Cooper, has been busy taking his career into uncharted territory. He has recently been cast in the leading role of God for the upcoming comedic Broadway production, An Act of God, which is based on the book The Last Testament: A Memoir by God. Parsons is also the voice for a cute little alien named Oh in the animated movie, Home.

While we know Jim’s Big Bang Theory alter ego, Sheldon, may believe himself to be as important as the big man upstairs, it might be difficult to imagine him playing the actual role of God. Author David Javerbaum is excited to have the Big Bang Theory superstar appear in his production.

“Jim is so inherently funny, we had no concerns about the comic chops. And he’s also so inherently likable. I compare him to Colbert. Once you have somebody that innately likeable, the character can be as absolutely boorish and impossible as you want. The fact that people of this caliber were interested in this project was already tremendous validation for me.”

The show’s big debut is on May 28 at Studio 54; tickets are on sale now. Don’t make the big mistake of believing this to be a serious show, such as The Nativity or The Passion of the Christ. An Act of God is an entirely fictional work, classified as a religious satire, and is sure to raise some unholy giggles.

Almost more difficult to imagine is the Big Bang Theory’s Parsons playing the part of a small purple alien in the animated movie Home, by DreamWorks Animation and Twentieth Century Fox. Until you watch it, that is. The character, Oh, may look nothing like the tall, thin, and nerdy Sheldon Cooper, but his attitude has Big Bang Theory know-it-all written all over it.

Along with Jim Parsons, Home features other big name celebrities such as Steve Martin, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez. You should get quite a bit of bang for your buck with this movie, which promises delightful humor and feel good moments. Flicks and Bits reports the synopsis as follows.

“When Earth is taken over by the overly-confident Boov, an alien race in search of a new place to call home, all humans are promptly relocated, while all Boov get busy reorganizing the planet. But when one resourceful girl, Tip, (Rihanna) manages to avoid capture, she finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov named Oh (Jim Parsons). The two fugitives realize there’s a lot more at stake than intergalactic relations as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime.”

Kidzworldquotes the Big Bang Theory actor in an interview where he was asked what kinds of themes in the story attracted him to do the movie.

“The little guy that I play, the alien, really comes in with a set of ideas of how the world is supposed to be. He thinks that’s all good and right. He meets the character Rihanna plays Tip and really understands what it is to accept other people who have different ways of doing things and whose beliefs may be different than yours, but that you can still be very, very close. That really resonates with me in our own lives if you will.”

Watch the trailer for Home below. By the end of the short clip, you’ll certainly be laughing out loud. The movie, based on children’s book The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex, will debut on March 20. Mark your calendars. Watch the Big Bang Theory Sheldon encased in a tiny purple minion-like body. It’s truly hilarious.
