The Daily Caller, an online news site founded by prominent conservative commentator Tucker Carlson as a conservative alternative to liberal-leaning sites such as the Huffington Post, published a curious headline on Tuesday, over an article penned by retired Army Maj. Gen. Jerry R. Curry.
Here is how the headline appeared when published in the Daily Caller Tuesday.
For readers who cannot see graphics on their computers, the headline read, “Kill All The Jews And When That Is Done Kill Those That Refused To Defend Them. [sic]”
While it is certainly difficult to believe that a mainstream, albeit right-leaning, site would dare to run a story that actually implored readers to “kill all the Jews,” the headline was a stunner nonetheless, and at the very least displayed an astounding lack of editorial judgment.
The content of the story itself argued that, “Middle East Muslim nations like Iran are publicly saying they want to kill every Jew on the face of the earth,” and that due to these genocidal intentions, Israel should not be compelled to negotiate with enemies who actually aspire to, in fact, “kill all the Jews.”
The new headline reads, “‘They Came For The Jews, And I Didn’t Speak Up’ It’s Happening Again.”
In other words, the original headline was a bizarre choice for the story itself — and read simply as a headline rather than coupled with a careful reading of the content, as is most often the case with online news articles — appeared shocking and offensive to say the least.
So what happened?
The site Talking Points Memo contacted the 45-year-old former CNN and MSNBC personality on Thursday, to find out the story behind the “Kill all the Jews” headline.
Amazingly, Tucker Carlson told TPM writer Brendan James that the Daily Caller had not received any complaints from its readers over the “Kill All The Jews” headline.
Carlson said the headline was subsequently changed after being flagged by the site’s managing editor, Vince Coglianese — but not because the headline appeared to call for mass extermination of Jews. Instead, Carlson said, the headline was changed for being “inarticulate.”
“It violated our first rule in that it wasn’t clear,” Carlson said.
But how could a headline reading “Kill All The Jews” ever make it onto a well-known news site, anyway? Carlson blamed the debacle on an editor who had apparently partied too hard on Monday night.
“We’ve got over 50 people here. He was hung over or something,” Carlson said, noting that the headline was not written by Curry, but by one of the Daily Caller staff editors. “I assume the editor was hung over,” Carlson reiterated, “But I don’t know. I literally have no idea.”
