Scarlett Johansson: Black Widow’s Sad Past Revealed In ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’

Scarlett Johansson has recently teased in an interview that Black Widow’s sad past will be revealed in Avengers: Age of Ultron. As one of the most highly anticipated films this year, the movie trailer received 34.3 million hits in the first 24 hours online alone. Johansson also portrayed her character in three previous films: Iron Man 2, Marvel’s The Avengers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Scarlett will also play Black Widow in Captain America: Civil War, due out next year.

In an interview with W Magazine, Johansson revealed her choice to play Black Widow surprised her family and friends. Scarlett was looking to play a comic book heroine, having done research and finding she connected with the character.

“People were surprised that I wanted to play a comic book heroine. But I loved Iron Man, and I met with Marvel to see what was possible.

I had done my research, and the Black Widow character resonated with me. She is dark and has faced death so many times that she has a deep perspective on the value of life. In the sequel, you learn more about the sadness in her past.”

In the comic books, Black Widow is first introduced as a Russian spy and antagonist to Iron Man, but later becomes a member of the Avengers. Little hints have been dropped here and there as to what her past might entail in the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, including a moment between her and the Hulk. Johansson herself has dropped a few hints about seeing the character’s softer side, though she’s still strong.

“Black Widow is a superhero, but she’s also human. She’s small, but she’s strong. It’s hard not to admire her. She packs a big punch. We all try to fight the forces of evil. Like Black Widow, you have to keep trying. The challenge is always there.”

Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal has been so popular that many want to see a Black Widow standalone movie. In 2010, discussions were held about the possibility, but Cinemablend believes it’s unlikely to happen. Black Widow would be the second female character to have her own Marvel-produced movie since Elektra.

Scarlett Johansson is all for her character having a solo movie. At the London premiere of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Scarlett gave her opinion.

“If you want to see a Black Widow spin-off movie, then I want to see it. We’ll see. We will put the request into Marvel tomorrow.”

Collider reported in October last year, however, that Marvel has no standalone film for Scarlett Johansson’s character in the works.

You can catch Scarlett Johansson in Avengers: Age of Ultron, directed by Joss Whedon, which opens this year in the U.K. on April 23 and the US on May 1. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth also co-star with Johansson.

What do you think about Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of the character? Are you looking forward to finding out about the character’s history? Do you agree with Johansson about Black Widow having her own movie?
