Lana Del Rey New Album Update: Singer Makes ‘Music to Watch Boys To’

Lana Del Rey’s songwriting process can often be described as deep and ethereal. So it’s hard to imagine the superstar penning a new song with a title as banal as “Music To Watch Boys To.”

However, that’s exactly what the 29-year old Ultraviolence singer claims is the basis for a new track she’s currently recording. When asked about her noirish and visual style in a recent interview with the L.A. Times, Lana discusses the song.

“I’m working on a new record now, and I have this one song, ‘Music to Watch Boys To.’ The title lends itself to a visual of shadows of men passing by, this girl’s eyes, her face. I can definitely see things.”

Del Rey has been called one of the most influential female singers of the current generation for both her style and strong lyrics. In a recent review by The Arbiter of Lana’s sophomore effort Ultraviolence – a nod to the groundbreaking film A Clockwork Orange – the writer acknowledges Lana’s sense of depth and derangement present in her lyrics:

“Her powerful tone is fueled by her even stronger lyricism. In the title song, she sings from the midst of an abusive relationship, ‘I can hear sirens, sirens. He hit me and it felt like a kiss. I can hear violins, violins. Give me all of that ultraviolence.'”

The author continues, “A sense of doom penetrates each and every song. Though you never find out what happens to Del Rey’s cast of women, it’s clear none leave their experiences unscathed.”

Lana Del Rey’s influence has expanded beyond the realm of the abstract to the point pop stars are even trying to imitate her ethereal style. As reported by Inquistr, Taylor Swift recently borrowed some of Lana’s moodiness for her new video “Summertime Sadness.”

So where does Del Rey herself draw her inspiration from? In a 2012 interview with GQ, Lana, whose real name is Lizzy Grant – openly revealed her struggles with alcohol abuse as the fuel behind her moods.

“A lot of the time…when I write about the thing that I’ve lost I feel like I’m writing about alcohol because that was the first love of my life. Sure, there have been people, but it’s really alcohol.”

But Lana Del Rey has moved past her struggles, however, citing that it’s been nine years since her last drink.

“I would drink every day. I would drink alone. I thought the whole concept was so f***ing cool. A great deal of what I wrote on Born To Die is about these wilderness years.”
