In speaking with the NBC Today show co-hosts Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, Jim Carrey addressed the elephant in the room directly, as Tina Fey snickered by his side. The 53-year-old Carrey ended his witty banter with jokes about Lauer and Guthrie hiding their embattled colleague Williams just as the interview with Jim was ending.
“Can I ask you a question, you guys? Where are you hiding Brian Williams? Where is he? I just want to say something in his defense. If the helicopter in front of me gets hit, I’m taking the story.”
As seen in the above video, Lauer, Guthrie, and Fey all looked pretty awkward in the wake of the joke by Jim Carrey, with each of them either giggling or looking down and not addressing the question. Before long, the standard line about running out of time for the interview was issued as an escape from the awkward talk about Brian Williams.
“Oh, look at the time!”
According to Us Magazine, 55-year-old Brian Williams was suspended with no pay for six months as he is investigated by NBC as the network gathers more information about the alleged false stories in question. Outside of the Jim Carrey joke at Brian Williams’ expense, other highlights of the actual SNL 40th Anniversary show included Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake’s “SNL40” cold open, which won a largely positive response on social media for the singing duo, who both performed a retrospective of some of the most popular catchphrases from Saturday Night Live episodes over the past four decades.
Meanwhile, Jim Carrey’s Brian Williams joke on the “SNL 40” red carpet is being published all around the web, with publications from the Huffington Post to the Daily Mail weighing in on the joke, with most folks calling it awkward. Tweeters on Twitter, however, have a different viewpoint about Carrey’s joke.
