Emile Hirsch just checked himself into rehab after he was questioned last month by police for allegedly attacking Hollywood executive Daniele Bernfeld at a Sundance Film Festival party in Park City, Utah, TMZ reported.
The actor was charged with a third degree felony assault charge after he allegedly placed Bernfeld, a Paramount movie exec, in a chokehold, according to reports.
Police said that the actor “appeared intoxicated” when he confronted the movie exec at the Park City film festival, according to TMZ.
Hirsch appeared intoxicated and asked [Daniele] why she looked ‘so tough’ and said she was a ‘rich kid’ who should not be at Sundance.
The festival, which is one of the largest independent film festivals in the U.S., is held annually in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Ogden, as well as at the Sundance Resort. The 2015 Sundance Film Festival was held from January 22 to February 1, 2015.
The incident occurred around 3:52 p.m. on January 25 at Tao Nightclub in Park City, Utah.
Bernfeld claims the 29-year-old Into the Wild star pulled her across a table and onto the floor where he landed on top of her, according to a police report.
NY Daily News reports that he then allegedly placed his hands around her neck and choked her so hard that she says it felt as if the front and back of her throat were touching.
After the incident, the alleged victim told the cops that everything seemed to go dark and she had blacked out momentarily.
Hirsch indicated to authorities that he was not aware of the woman’s identity and that he had been consuming alcohol.
He’s due to appear in court on March 16, 2015.
Summit County prosecutor Ryan Stack confirmed that the woman, Dani Bernfeld, is an executive for Insurge Pictures, which is a subsidiary of Paramount Pictures, KSN reported.
KSN reported that the California-born resident of Encino had told police that he’d had three to four drinks and that an officer had reported to prosecutors that Hirsch was slurring his words, his balance was off, and that he smelled of alcohol.
The Lone Survivor actor was at Sundance for the premiere of the drama Ten Thousand Saints, a movie in which he appears alongside Asa Butterfield and Ethan Hawke.
Hirsch’s spokesperson announced that he’d checked into rehab for alcohol addiction on the same day that he was charged with felony assault. He told TMZ that the facts he could relay “are that he consumed an enormous amount of alcohol on the evening in question and he has no memory of what happened.”
