Dog Runs Inside Hospital To Visit Owner: Miniature Schnauzer Used Instincts To Find Her [Video]

A dog ran inside a hospital last weekend looking for her owner and was captured on video. She traveled 20 blocks from home, using her instincts to locate her mom.

ABC News reports that the miniature Schnauzer named Sissy was determined to find owner, Nancy Franck. Franck has been at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for about two weeks following surgery. Her husband, Dale Franck, is taking care of Sissy and another miniature Schnauzer, Barney, at home.

Dale Franck says Sissy was on a “mission” to find Nancy, “but she couldn’t find the right elevator to take.”

Sissy is seen in surveillance video entering the hospital through the automatic doors.

Dale first noticed Sissy missing around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. He frantically looked everywhere for the Schnauzer and calling her name. He said he was “pulling his hair out.” He was relieved to get a call from Mercy Medical Center about Sissy. When the dog ran inside the hospital looking for her owner, security was able to get the contact information off her collar.

When Dale’s daughter went to pick up Sissy, she got permission to take her up to Nancy’s room for a few minutes.

“She told her mom, ‘I got a surprise for you!'” Dale Franck said. “My wife was like, ‘How’d you get her in here? Did you sneak her under your coat?”

Mercy Medical Center Security Officer, Samantha Conrad, tells ABC 9 News that when she suddenly looked up, she saw a small dog running in the hospital lobby.

Dale Franck thinks he knows how Sissy was able to find the hospital where Nancy is at. The Schnauzer used to ride with him to pick up Nancy next to the hospital, but he says they never walked the route before.

“We started looking at the tags and it had the address and we saw how far away this dog had lived, as far as going at least fifteen blocks to get here. So it was quite an amazing journey that this dog made,” Conrad said.

Sixty-five-year-old Nancy Franck is battling uterine cancer and it’s mostly gone, her husband says. She has a close relationship with Sissy. The couple got her when she was 8-weeks-old and she’s now 11 years old. As Dale tells ABC News, “I’d say we didn’t pick her, she picked us.”

The miniature Schnauzer must have used her instincts to nail down where her owner was because Nancy hadn’t been at that hospital before. Although she didn’t know exactly where Nancy was at, she was close enough to getting it right.
