Mystery Of The Costa Concordia Captain And The Moldovan Woman

Investigators are digging deeper into the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster. They have discovered that Domnica Cemortan, 25, a Moldovan woman who lives in Bucharest, Romania, was apparently drinking with Captain Francesco Schettino just a few hours before the accident and police want to question her about what happened. Nobody seems to know what she was really doing on the cruise ship, not being part of the crew or listed as a passenger.

Ms Cemortan defended Captain Schettino, saying:

“Look at how many people are alive because of him. It’s a tragedy that people are missing, but he saved over 3,000 people on that ship because of his actions.”

She also said that the Captain was on the bridge at 11.50pm:

“I saw him there, before I managed to get off the ship. He did not abandon ship before everyone else. He would not have done that. He knows what his duty is. He is one of the best captains in the company. He is very skilful and experienced when it comes to manoeuvring the ship in enclosed spaces, like harbours.”

Francesco Schettino has also been accusing of abandoning ship, but he said:

“I was trying to get people to get into the boats in an orderly fashion. Suddenly, since the ship was at a 60 to 70 degree angle, I tripped and I ended up in one of the boats. That’s how I found myself there.”

The investigation goes on. At least 20 people are still missing from the Costa Concordia cruise ship.
