Beyonce In Going White Photo Controversy

Beyonce is back in the news, in fact she’s hardly out of it, but this time for the wrong reasons. The latest photograph, used as a promo for her latest album, is causing a lot of controversy on blogs and in the news. The reason? See for yourself, the photo shows Beyonce in an extremely well-lit provocative pose which makes her skin appear a lot whiter than usual. But go back and have another look at the “4” album cover. As well as sporting the blonde hair, Beyonce also has the whiter skin tone. Who can tell what the marketing idea behind her new look really is.

Anthony Blades, founder of race blog, ThisIsYourConscious.com, had this to say:

“It’s like, Again? Are we here again? I think in a lot of ways she’s culpable because there’s history there. She’s not saying explicitly you have to lighten your skin, but it does carry that inherent message.”

Blades refers to the L’Oréal ad campaign from 2008 which caused a stir because her skin tone for that ad was also considerably lighter. L’Oréal denied making any digital changes to Beyonce’s skin tone:

“We highly value our relationship with Ms Knowles. It is categorically untrue that L’Oreal Paris altered Ms Knowles’ features or skin tone in the campaign for Feria hair color.”

But perhaps we’re all taking this a little too seriously and maybe Beyonce’s skin tone actually does alter throughout the year. What do you think? Should Beyonce take responsibility for how light her skin tone appears in promotional photographs?
