Obama Accused of Lying About Same-Sex Marriage Stance

Well-known former political adviser David Alexrod has written a book accusing President Barack Obama of lying about his opposition to same-sex marriage. Obama made his claim of opposition to same-sex marriage in his very first election, claiming support for civil unions only.

President Obama is now responding to Alexrod’s accusations, stating that David misunderstood his beliefs.

“I think David is mixing up my personal feelings with my position on the issue.”

Obama also explained that what Alexrod is claiming is political lies, is actually political strategy. President Barack Obama made a recent statement on the balance of keeping his religious voters and civil rights voters in his corner. In 1996, Obama filled in a questionnaire for the state senate which revealed some very strong religious beliefs. Among these questions was one regarding same-sex marriage; a question to which Obama responded with his religious opposition.

“The old questionnaire … is an example of struggling with what was a real issue at the time, which is, how do you make sure that people’s rights are enjoyed and these religious sensitivities were taken into account.”

According to David Alexrod, the religious sensitivities Obama was referring to was those of the black church. It was, in Alexrod’s expert opinion, the heart of Obama’s election. The black church made up a large number of voters in the Obama corner and backing same-sex marriage could potentially ruin that. Alexrod explains this clearly in his book.

“Opposition to gay marriage was particularly strong in the black church, and as he ran for higher office, he grudgingly accepted the counsel of more pragmatic folks like me, and modified his position to support civil unions rather than marriage, which he would term a ‘sacred union.”

In 2008, Barack Obama, the presidential candidate who promised “change,” did not originally back same-sex marriage. It was only after Vice President Joe Biden stepped in front of the gay rights campaign in support of same-sex marriage that Barack Obama changed his stance on the matter. This occurred specifically in May of 2012, when the vice president appeared for an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press.

After Obama’s stance was changed in public, David Alexrod reports in his book that this was after a long time of speaking falsely about the issue. Time Magazine reports that Obama had jumped ship years before informing the public in order to make as far as he did in his political career.

David Alexrod’s book, Believer, is a full reveal of his time served as adviser for current President Barack Obama, the very president he claims to have helped lie to the country.
