Bobbi Kristina’s Father Won’t Withdraw Life Support

Bobbi Kristina Brown has been in a medically induced coma for nine days, and reports are emerging that she has been officially declared brain dead. The news, which has been reported by several news outlets, led to a rumor early Tuesday that Bobbi Kristina will be removed from life support on February 11, the third anniversary of her mother’s, Whitney Houston’s, death.

“The move is a symbolic way to keep the mother and daughter together for eternity.”

Conflicting reports have emerged about when or whether Bobbi Kristina Brown will be removed from life support. According to TMZ, Bobby Brown’s lawyer issued a statement this morning saying that the singer has no intention of removing his 21-year-old daughter from life support. This directly contradicts sources in the Brown family, who spoke to TMZ this morning and claimed that the plan was to remove Bobbi Kristina from life support at midnight.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the idea to remove Bobbi Kristina from life support came from her maternal grandmother, Cissy Houston. This brings to mind the question: who’s decision will it ultimately be to remove the measures keeping Bobbi Kristina’s heart and lungs functioning?

If a person is incapacitated and doesn’t have documents indicating their wishes (a medical directive), then medical decisions fall to their next of kin. In the case of Bobbi Kristina, many thought that her next of kin was Nick Gordon, as the two had claimed to be a married couple for nearly a year. According to Bobby Brown’s attorney, Bobbi Kristina and Gordon were never legally married, meaning he has no right to make decisions about her medical care.

Brown’s desire to prevent Gordon from making decisions about Bobbi Kristina’s medical care may very well be the reason he was so quick to issue a statement saying the two were never married. Whatever Brown’s personal feelings about Gordon, Bobbi Kristina was found with bruises. Gordon claims that the bruising was caused by CPR, but investigators say the bruises were on her face and mouth. The nature of the injuries and revelations of the couple’s violent history led police in Atlanta, where Gordon and Bobbi Kristina Brown reside, to launch an investigation into Bobbi Kristina’s drowning.

With Gordon disqualified as Bobbi Kristina Brown’s next of kin, choices about her medical care fall to her father, Bobby Brown. Regardless of what Cissy Houston, the Houston family, or the Brown family want, the decision to remove Bobbi Kristina from life support are ultimately her father’s. For now at least, that means that February 11 will come and go with Bobbi Kristina Brown still on life support.
