Beck Responds To Kanye West’s Rant And Criticism For ‘Album Of The Year’ Win At Grammys

Beck has officially been added to Kanye West’s list of criticized musicians. Although the Yeezus rapper’s jaw-dropping antics at the Grammy’s weren’t too surprising for many viewers, he still managed to leave most of the world and Grammy attendees quite bemused.

For those who missed it, Kanye wasn’t too pleased with the announcement of the winner for “Album of the Year” at the Grammy’s. Apparently, Kanye, 37, didn’t think Beck should have won the highly prestigious accolade for his 2014 album Morning Phase. So, he took the initiative to voice his “opinion.” But, of course, he had to do so in typical “Kanye West” fashion. Ironically, Beyoncé was also nominated, so he took the moment as an opportunity to repeat history!

As soon as Beck approached the stage, Kanye headed for the podium as well. Although many assumed the rapper was just paying homage to his infamous 2009 rant about Taylor Swift’s over Beyoncé at the VMAs, he made it quite clear that he really didn’t feel the famed rocker should have won the award. Following the annual award ceremony, Kanye shared his opinion of Beck’s win during an interview with E! News. He also shared his opinion of the Grammy’s and how he felt Beyoncé’s self-titled album was snubbed. Here’s what he had to say.

“I don’t even know what (Beck) said,” Kanye said. “I just know that, the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us, we aren’t going to play with them no more. At this point, we’re tired of it. What happens is, when you keep on diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration, as musicians, have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyoncé album, and they feel like it takes them to a different place.

“And then they do this promotional event, and they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want commercial advertising,” West continued.

“We aren’t playing with them anymore. And by the way, I got my wife, my daughter, and I got my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing that would put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s why I didn’t say anything tonight, but you all knew what it meant when ‘Ye stepped on that stage.”

Now, Beck is responding to the “criticism” he received from the notable rapper/producer, reports US Weekly. Even he admitted he thought Beyoncé was going to win the award.

“I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody,” Beck said in a post-awards interview. “How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right? “I thought she was going to win. Come on she’s Beyoncé,” Beck said. Of Kanye West’s comments, Beck said, “You can’t please everybody, man. I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”
