Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Artist Top BAFTA Nominations
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Artist lead the nominations for the 2012 BAFTA awards (British Academy of Film and Television Arts). Silent movie The Artist has earned 12 nominations, while British Cold War-era spy movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has 11.
Tinker Tailor … and The Artist are both nominated for Best Film, along with The Descendants, Drive, and The Help.
The Artist director Michel Hazanavicius is nominated for Best Director, while the film’s leading stars Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo are nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress gongs respectively.
Bejo will compete with, amongst others, The Iron Lady star Meryl Streep for Best Actress, while George Clooney (The Descendants) and Brad Pitt (Moneyball) will duke it out with Dujardin, Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor …) and Michael Fassbender (Spy and Shame) for Best Actor.
Martin Scorsese’s Hugo has nine nominations, though not for Best Film. Still, Scorsese earns a nod for Best Director, and has another film, George Harrison: Living in the Material World, up for Best Documentary.
The BAFTAs usually nominates more European films than U.S.-based awards such as the Golden Globes or Oscars – I daresay it’s a little more universal – and this year is no different. Here’s the full list of BAFTA 2012 nominations:
