‘Mortal Kombat X’ News: Microtransactions, Faction Wars, And More

The latest Mortal Kombat X news could definitely shake things up in the usually gore-filled universe. Faction Wars have been announced, and there are rumors that microtransactions may be hitting the franchise by the Mortal Kombat X release date of April 14.

Faction Wars could really keep things interesting long after you’ve mastered the brutal fatalities and managed to keep your lunch. The online-only part of the game will have you joining one of five teams and attempting to score the most points to keep that faction on top. The White Lotus, the Lin Kuei, the Brotherhood of the Shadow, the Black Dragon, and the Special Forces all await your participation in the five-way rivalry of the Mortal Kombat X Faction Wars.

It is unknown in this part of the latest Mortal Kombat X news if the game will automatically assign you a faction depending on the character you decide to fight as, or if it’s independent of who you choose. Kung Lao may instantly put you with the White Lotus faction, for example, or Sub-Zero could make you a Lin Kuei. You might even create an original character like you did in previous games and decide the faction yourself, but the trailer below doesn’t mention custom fighters.

According to the Mortal Kombat X trailer above, everything you do as a member of your faction will contribute to the team, and there will be 24 hour periods in which outside forces invade, adding to the constantly evolving challenge. It is unknown what the rewards will be for being a member of the winning faction.

Mortal Kombat X microtransactions could also be a major addition this time, following in the footsteps of Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed. While the creators haven’t confirmed it, NetherRealm Studios marketing manager Brian Goodman mentioned the idea alongside the infamous word “yet.”

Could there be entire characters you will have to buy instead of unlocking them through gameplay? Could there be “Krypt” rewards that can only be unlocked through monetary transaction? Hopefully, NetherRealm Studios is going to keep potential microtransactions interesting, but not necessary for owning the full game the way Killer Instinct did.

Microtransactions could be a proverbial wet blanket on the latest Mortal Kombat X news if it’s true.

For those looking forward to the Mortal Kombat X story, director of art Steve Beran claims it will be like a “blockbuster movie within the game itself.” Anyone who loved what MK 9 did with the story will likely be thrilled to know it will continue in the same way. The story will span 25 years, indicating a possible coming-of-age story revolving around Cassie Cage, daughter of Sonya and Johnny Cage.

While we await the announcement of further Mortal Kombat X characters to fill the growing roster, this round of Mortal Kombat X news could certainly indicate NetherRealm’s dedication to outdoing itself.
