There’s An App For That: Katy Perry Strikes Mobile Game Deal

Following in the footsteps of the venerable Kim Kardashian, popular singer Katy Perry is currently working with publisher Glu Mobile on an iOS and Android game.

After receiving a record viewership for her performance at the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show and the fact that she is shortly to appear at the 2015 Grammy Awards, Katy Perry is tipped to continue her success with a game, featuring her “voice, likeness and personality.”

Kim Kardashian’s mobile game became a hit in 2014, and now the same publisher, Glu Mobile, is working with Perry under a five-year licensing deal. The game has a planned release for iOS and Android devices somewhere around the end of 2015.

According to the Guardian the game will probably follow the template laid down by Kardashian’s app, in a free-to-play game, encouraging players to try and become celebrities. The money side of things comes from in-app purchases, necessary to speed up players’ progress in the game.

Chief Executive of Glu Mobile, Niccolo de Masi announced shortly after revealing details of the deal that further details will be kept under wraps until the game actually comes out.

“Ultimately the Katy Perry title and its specificities will be under wraps until it comes out. But I think it’s fair to say that it’s not going to be a shooter.”

“Something closer to a narrative-based RPG makes a lot of sense than an action-RPG for example.”

Looking back on her recent Super Bowl performance, it is unknown whether dancing sharks will feature in the game, but Entertainmentwise and others certainly hope they do.

According to Glu, they are hoping Katy Perry’s current popularity on the social media will work as a powerful launchpad for the game, as happened in Kardashian’s case. Katy currently enjoys 64.6 million followers on Twitter as well as 77.1 million Facebook fans.

Glu were certainly successful with Kardashian’s game. Released in June 2014, they reckon it has made them $74.3m of revenues by the end of the year, despite only 28.4 million downloads, which is relatively small when it comes to mobile games.

Due to this success they decided to look for other popular figures to expand their offering and are approaching other celebrities besides Katy Perry, to be announced later this year.

In the meantime, while everyone awaits the release of the Katy Perry app, there’s the possibility of watching her sing her ballad, “By the Grace of God” at the 2015 Grammys Awards coming up on Sunday, February 8.
