Heather Coglaiti Killed By Ex After Cops Refused Protective Order

A Texas woman is dead after pleas for protection to police weren’t answered. Heather Coglaiti, 33, was shot dead by her ex-boyfriend in a tragic murder-suicide, and now her story is going viral. That’s because the deaths of both she and her estranged lover may have been preventable. Raw Story reports that the Corpus Christi woman had pleaded with police just hours before she was killed, and they chose not to pursue charges after taking the man’s side. Now officers claim that they did all they could for the woman.

Heather Coglaiti reportedly went to the Corpus Christi Police Department to file charges against her former boyfriend Jose Calderon, with whom she’d had an on-again-off-again relationship. Officials admit that she wanted to report that Calderon had threatened to harm her. He also allegedly slashed her car tires. This was supposedly one of numerous times that the man had threatened her. In fact, Coglaiti claimed that he had threatened her at least seven times over a span of just one month. Instead of pursuing charges against Calderon, Corpus Christi Police allowed him to come in to the station voluntarily to give his side of the story. His side of the story involved accusing Heather of being the aggressor in the cycle of abuse that gripped their relationship. He was recorded giving his statements to police.

“We’ve done this a lot through the whole two years. We go back and forth, we’ll fight like this and she knows I won’t punch her but she punches the hell out of me in the face and she’ll bite, do whatever.”

In the end, Calderon was convincing enough to walk right out of the Corpus Christi Police Department. He wasn’t given any charges and he wasn’t held on any charges either. The 37-minute interview ended with Calderon leaving the department. She was not granted an emergency protective order, giving Calderon the freedom to keep contact between he and her. It was only approximately 16 hours later that the bodies of both Calderon and Coglaiti were found in an apartment. Calderon shot Coglaiti to death before turning the gun on himself. New York Daily News shares more information about the murder-suicide.

Records reportedly prove that there was an established relationship between the couple and the CCPD. Heather Coglaiti has been reporting death threats and other incidents involving calderon since at least January of 2014 — over a year ago. Nonetheless, CCPD officials believe that they did all they were able to do to protect the slain woman. Do you agree?
