A 40-year-old Texas woman, who has just about had enough of dating, decided to take the unprecedented move of getting married anyway. The only thing is, she married herself!
While most women usually wait it out, however frustrating it might be hanging around for "Mr. Right" to show up, Yasmin Eleby took her love life into her own hands (pun not intended) and married herself, in a full-blown ceremony, along with her family members and friends.
The ceremony itself included one of Yasmin's sisters, who is also a minister. The sibling carried out the "spiritual" or "symbolic" ceremony, as legally you can't actually marry yourself in America.
Jasmin's other three sisters were bridesmaids, while her mom symbolically "gave her away," or should we say, "gave herself back," in this case.
The wedding party itself was much like any other, only there was none of the usual bickering between the two families as only the Elebys were present.
The event planner, Darrell Colone, chose the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) for the event, as he was able to recreate the space, "so it was like an open canvass," according to him.
The CEO of HMAAC, John Guess Jr., said, "It seems natural that they would choose this space, since the community feels welcome here."
The happy bride said about the wedding to herself, on her Facebook page shorty after the ceremony, "I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support that was shown to me during my celebration of love and life."
For her part, Yasmin plans to enjoy an extended honeymoon, alone, travelling to Cambodia, Laos, and Dubai later this year.
Yasmin concluded, regarding her special day, "Don't be afraid to take risks. I've learned that family and friends are always willing to welcome you back home if/when you decide to return. Thank you once again to each and every person that took the time out of their busy schedule to help me celebrate turning 40!"
