Last week, we learned that X-Men: Apocalypse will be bringing back a number of beloved characters. Bryan Singer stated that Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm have all been re-cast. Fortunately for fans, it has been announced that Rose Byrne will be returning to the X-Men set for her role as Moira MacTaggert.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Apocalypse writer, Simon Kinberg, spoke on the importance of Byrne’s character.
“She’s a significant character in the movie. We ended First Class with Charles having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them. It’s certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class, and would like to mine more in this one.”
Kinberg teases that MacTaggert will have a major role in the new movie, though it is still unclear how she will tie into the film. X-Men: Apocalypse is set in the early 1980s, about 20 years after First Class.
Most of the details for the film are tightly sealed away. However, Kinberg did explain to Entertainment Weekly how Apocalpyse would fit into the already established story lines.
“This movie is the completion of the first arcs of Charles, Eric, Raven, and Hank, who are essentially our main characters. They’re such young actors and young characters, so there’s a lot more story to tell. But as a first phase of their lives, there is this feeling of closure by the end of the movie.”
According to SuperHero Hype, Kinberg addressed the question of whether we will see a Fantastic Four and X-Men crossover.
“The reboot of FanFour really needed to work in and of itself. We were doing something pretty radical with the tone of the movie. If we wanted to find a way to connect them to the X-Men, we could. There’s a lot of precedent from the comics.”
Rose Byrne first portrayed Moira MacTaggert in First Class. She played a CIA Agent and ultimately became Professor Charles Xavier’s first love. Xavier ultimately had to erase some of MacTaggert’s memory. Perhaps we will get to see the relationship re-spark in Apocalypse.
Are you happy that Rose Byrne will be back in X-Men as MacTaggert?
