‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’: Paul Bettany On Playing Vision

When Paul Bettany first signed on to Iron Man as the voice of JARVIS, Tony Stark’s sarcastic A.I., he could hardly have anticipated the franchise’s success, not to mention his own future as a part of the Marvel family. Back then, a shared universe seemed like a pipe dream, and it’s become the staple of the comic book movie genre. A role that could have just been a one-off or a trilogy has grown into something much bigger, and it’s a completely unique experience for Bettany. He spoke to News.com.au about his experience (via Collider).

JARVIS
Paul Bettany plays JARVIS in all three ‘Iron Man’ films, as well as in ‘The Avengers.’

“That’s the really great thing about the Marvel gig for me. I have never known if I have had a job six months out ever in my life. And now I know that they have plans and I can be even more judicious about the stuff that I do outside of that work. I can wait for the right thing and feel really attached to it.”

With a solid gig in his back pocket, Bettany can really pick and choose his roles like he never really could before. But with his current role in Avengers: Age Of Ultron potentially evolving, what are his thoughts on Vision, and how did he prepare for the role? After all, since he’s been in three of the Iron Man films and in Avengers, it’d be safe to assume he is a bit familiar with the franchise, right? Bettany admits that even though he played the voice of JARVIS, he hadn’t actually seen any of the Marvel films until he was cast as Vision.

“I did a lot of research — and my research was watching all of the films. I realized they are so interlinked and I wanted to understand the universe I was in. So I did and it was a really amazing, fun experience — especially going from my tiny, 20-day movie (a film called Shelter) with no money and no trailers to this behemoth film was just great. Everybody made me feel really at home and I have no bad stories — they are really funny people and really creative. I have never seen sets that big in my whole career.”

The Vision
In the film, Vision is an android made by Ultron.
