‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Season 12 Kicks Off: Dancers Brave NYC Cold [Photos]

Fans of So You Think You Can Dance will see some big changes when the series returns for Season 12 this summer, but the action is just starting. The first auditions for So You Think You Can Dance Season 12 were held in New York City on Saturday, and Fox has now shared some behind-the-scenes photos from the auditions.

Dancers lined up and braved the cold weather on Saturday to earn their spot on this season’s roster of dancer. The photos show several of the dancers bundled up to fight the chilly temperatures. However, the excitement felt by many of the dancers is clearly shown in the photos. The dancers are ready to show the judges that they want to be in the top ten for Season 12.

These dancers faced new judges, though. Mary Murphy’s departure from the series was announced earlier this month. The hot tamale train left the station for the final time. Murphy did release a statement about her departure from the series, according to a previously released report from the Inquisitr.

“I’m saddened of course to be released from my contract. I’m very grateful and proud to have been part of such an extraordinary television show, So You Think You Can Dance, for 11 seasons. I’m sure there wasn’t a person watching that didn’t know I loved what I did!!”

Nigel Lythgoe announced the addition of two new judges for So You Think You Can Dance Season 12. Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo join Nigel for the new season.

This will be the third series Abdul has judged for the network. Paula spent several seasons on the panel of American Idol, and she also appeared on the first season of The X Factor. Nigel made it clear in the past he wanted to work Paula for So You Think You Can Dance, and Fox finally made it happen.

Nigel did share his thoughts on the new panel, according to UPI.

“With the new and exciting format comes a new and exciting panel of judges. I’m delighted that Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo will be joining me at the judges’ table this season on So You Think You Can Dance. Paula is an incredible artist and she brings the perfect combination of expertise and heart to the panel. Jason’s insight, humor and creativity will add a new perspective to the panel that we haven’t had before.”

Paula called her addition to the series and its judging panel “a true honor and pleasure.”
