At 45, Jennifer Lopez manages to balance a personal life that includes 6-year-old twins with a professional career that’s skyrocketing with opportunities from acting to singing. She shared her secrets for keeping her energy level high and her body perfect, including her diet and fitness plan, with People magazine.

Lopez begins her day by focusing on the twins, making sure that they get breakfast and are off to school before she takes care of herself. Then Jennifer sips a protein shake (see the recipe at the end of this article) and begins her workout, which lasts a minimum of 60 minutes and keeps her dance skills strong.

A typical day for Jennifer includes recording work, brand endorsements, and taking on the role of judge for American Idol. But she makes sure to be home for dinner with her children.

“I read somewhere that if you have dinner with your kids, they’re less likely to do drugs!” explained Lopez of prioritizing a family dinner. “They try to get me to read three or four books a night. I love that they love to read.”

When it comes to her specific diet, Jennifer has become a proponent of protein shakes as a way to stay on a low-carb diet without worrying about a lot of cooking time. She teamed up with BodyLab to create a variety of protein powders specifically for women, reported Shape magazine.

“Growing up in the Bronx I grew up on a diet of delicious, but not so healthy food. I began to learn more about nutrition, exercise, and the benefits of a tailored program for women specifically—things that are made for women by women.”

Lopez also visited Dr. Mehmet Oz’s show to talk about her weight loss tips, diet, and fitness, reported ABC News. She emphasized that having children made her want to take care of her health.

“I want to take care of myself better, because I want to be great for my kids.”

During her visit to the Dr. Oz Show, Jennifer revealed that when she wants to lose weight, she substitutes a protein shake for breakfast and for dinner, viewing that as the key to taking off pounds more easily. She demonstrated her favorite diet recipe.

Ingredients

1 scoop BodyLab TastyShake vanilla or chocolate
3 cups strawberries
1 cup blueberries
1 cup raspberries
1 cup Greek yogurt
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp honey
1 tsp fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup ice cubes

Dr. Oz applauded Jennifer’s dedication to diet, commending her emphasis on protein for her shakes. He recently featured a weight loss plan on his show that includes a daily protein shake each morning, as the Inquisitr reported.

Called the Fat Flush Plan, the three-day diet is designed to help take off up to five pounds, featuring protein, shakes, vegetables, and vegetable broth. After the three days, Dr. Oz has developed a longer term weight loss plan called the Total 10 which uses a back-to-basics low-carb diet approach.
